Just Because I Wrote It Doesn’t Mean I Know It

Hey Dreamers and Artists,

If you put a song down for a while to work on others (or after every good jam session) make a recording and write easily translatable chords and lead lines out. Otherwise a song you wrote over a year (and one broken wrist) ago can be super hard to remember. Bright side, the new version of Repent will be greatly improved. Purgatory Falls: A Post Apocalyptic Rock Opera will have life!

Peace,

Damon

Greatest Rock Operas of All Time?

I recently ran across a couple IGN Articles titled, “The 14 Greatest Rock Operas/Concept Albums of All Time.” You can find it here, as well as “The 25 Best Rock Albums of the Last Decade, found here. You can read them yourself, so I’m not going to restate everything, and I can’t even necessarily argue with it for the most part. I just have a few comments.

These lists are not all inclusive, but they do mention some great albums, including David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust”, Green Day’s “American Idiot” (now also a stage musical” and by far my favorite Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” – (I’ve discussed this in previous posts. I’ve listened to this album more times that I can count, and each time I notice something new. It’s dark, it’s dramatic, and almost any song from the album would make a great stand alone single. If you haven’t given this album a listen from start to finish you’re definitely missing out.)

Anyway, give the list a look. Give the albums a listen. Let us know what you think.

Composer Quest

Hey All, I’m starting to get some basic function in my hand but not enough to play guitar. So I’ve been re-visiting some old Composer Quest episodes – a podcast by Composer Charlie McCarron ( check his stuff out at http://www.charliemccarron.com ) trying to glean some additional knowledge to make Purgatory Falls: A Post Apocalyptic Rock Opera, better for everyone. I’ll keep posting updates here at Another Rock Opera.

Workshop With Pat Pattison

Hey All,

I attended a seminar and master class with Pat Pattison here in San Diego. It definitely added to my song writing tool box. For those of you who don’t know, Pat is a professor at Berklee College of Music. He’s got some great books on Rhyming and Lyrics.

He also has a free course at http://www.coursera.org. Check it out if you get a chance.

In the mean time, I’ll be looking back at a few of the songs from Purgatory Falls: A Post Apocalyptic Rock Opera, with a new lens and posting results here at http://www.anotherrockopera.com
